Largest Solar Farms In The UK 2026
There are around 1,336 operational solar farms in the UK, according to the latest government data. Solar farms are large areas of land accommodating multiple solar panels in order to generate electricity from the sun on a large scale.
These farms offer renewable energy solutions where vast areas of land are utilised to capture the most sunlight, feeding directly into the grid.
Across the UK, there are numerous solar farms helping the country have access to sustainable energy. Below, we have explored a few of the biggest nationwide.
5 Of The Largest Solar Farms In The UK
Cleve Hill Solar Farm, Kent – 373MW
Cleve Hill Solar Park in Kent is currently the largest operational solar farm in the UK, with a generating capacity of approximately 373MW. Developed by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, the site reached commercial operations in mid-2025 after construction began in 2023.
Cleve Hill was the first solar project in the UK to be approved as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) – a designation typically reserved for major national infrastructure like motorways and airports. During its commissioning phase, peak electricity exports from the site are reported to have reached the equivalent of around 0.7% of the UK’s total national power demand at that moment.
A co-located battery energy storage system (BESS) is currently under construction at the site. Once complete, Cleve Hill will become the largest combined solar and storage facility built in the UK.
Llanwern Solar Farm – 75MW
Llanwern Solar Farm, located in South Wales, is one of the largest solar farms in the UK. This massive solar park spans approximately 250 acres and has a generating capacity of 75 MW.
Situated on land adjacent to the Llanwern Steelworks, it is a prime example of how large-scale solar installations can be integrated into industrial areas.
The farm supplies enough energy to power tens of thousands of homes annually, contributing significantly to the UK’s renewable energy targets.
Shotwick Solar Farm – 72MWp
Shotwick Solar Farm in Flintshire, Wales, is the largest privately-owned solar farm in the UK. With a capacity of 72 MW, this solar farm powers the nearby UPM Shotton paper mill, making it a unique case of an industrial operation being directly powered by renewable energy.
Covering about 250 acres, Shotwick continues to be a cornerstone of the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure, ensuring local industries can reduce their carbon footprints significantly.
Scurf Dyke Solar Farm, East Yorkshire – 71MWp
Scurf Dyke Solar Farm, located near Driffield in the East Riding of Yorkshire, has a capacity of 71MWp with a 50MW export limit. Built by BayWa.re and owned by FP Lux Group, it came online in 2023 after planning permission was granted in 2020.
The site also includes an adjacent 8MW battery energy storage system. In 2024, Norwegian renewable power generator Statkraft signed a ten-year PPA covering both the solar farm and the BESS.
RAF Lyneham Solar Farm, Wiltshire – approx. 69.9MWp
Commissioned in 2015, RAF Lyneham Solar Farm was one of the first major solar installations on government-owned land in the UK, developed as part of a Cabinet Office initiative to deploy solar across government sites. At the time it came online, it was widely considered the largest solar farm in the country — a title it has since passed to several successors.
What Does the Future Hold for UK Solar Farms?
The projects listed above represent the current state of large-scale solar in the UK, but the pipeline looks significantly larger.
With the NSIP threshold rising, developers who previously capped projects at 70MW to avoid the DCO process will now be able to bring much larger sites through local authority planning. The UK government’s target of 70GW of installed solar capacity by 2035 means the current list of largest solar farms is likely to look very different within just a few years.
