The Solar Panel Recycling Process
Recycling solar panels as a UK business is a straightforward process when you work with a licensed WEEE-compliant recycler.
As a business, you have a legal obligation under the WEEE Directive to ensure your end-of-life panels are processed responsibly: They cannot be sent to landfill or collected through general waste.
Once your panels arrive at our Burscough facility, here is exactly what happens to them:
How We Recycle Solar Panels: Step-By-Step
1. De-Framing
Each panel enters our automated de-framing unit.
Hydraulic pressure blocks apply controlled force to all four sides, cleanly separating the aluminium frame from the glass and internal layers.
The recovered aluminium is collected for direct recycling.
2. Thermal Glass Separation
The de-framed panel is transferred via conveyor into a controlled heat chamber.
Carefully regulated temperatures soften the bonding layer between the glass and the internal solar cells, preparing it for safe separation.
3. Glass Removal
A precision array of industrial brushes and separation tools spans the full width of the panel.
These gently but effectively remove the softened glass from the surface without damaging recoverable materials beneath.
4. Glass Recovery
The separated glass falls onto a dedicated conveyor system and is extracted from the processing line.
It is then prepared for cleaning and reintroduction into the glass manufacturing supply chain.
5. Metal & Silicon Recovery
The remaining photovoltaic layer (solar “carpet”) enters a specialised hydrostatic separation chamber.
Fine metal brushes and controlled mechanical processes recover valuable materials including silver, silicon, and rare earth elements for reuse in manufacturing.

FAQs
How Do I Arrange Solar Panel Recycling For My Business?
Arranging solar panel recycling with PV Recycling is straightforward. Contact our team with details of your location, the volume of panels to be collected, and your preferred timeframe. We will provide a competitive quote and confirm a collection date that works around your operational schedule. Our team can collect from a single site or across multiple locations nationwide, and we can assist with packing and loading panels onto pallets if required.
What Documentation Will I Receive After Recycling My Solar Panels?
Every collection completed by PV Recycling is accompanied by a full duty of care audit trail. This includes a digital consignment note covering the collection and transport of your panels, and a certificate of destruction confirming that your waste has been processed at a licensed WEEE-compliant treatment facility. This documentation demonstrates your business’s compliance with the WEEE Directive and can be retained for audit purposes.
How Long Does the Solar Panel Recycling Process Take?
Collection timescales depend on your location and volume. For larger solar farm decommissioning projects or time-sensitive site clearances, our team can discuss priority scheduling. Once panels arrive at our Burscough facility, mechanical processing is carried out promptly and your certificate of destruction is issued shortly after.
