Oxford PV Achieves Commercial Sale In US

A University of Oxford spinoff company called Oxford PV has developed a new solar technology which produces 20% more energy than standard silicon panels. This new product has achieved its first commercial sale in the US, setting to revolutionise the renewable energy landscape in the United States. Their PV panels have achieved a solar panel world-record with 26.6% efficiency.

The panels will be used in a utility-scale installation, reducing the levelised cost of electricity and contributing to more efficient land use. This is through generating more electricity from the same amount of space.

How Were These Powerful Solar Panels Made?

The 72-cell panels are powered by perovskite-on-silicon cells produced at Oxford PV’s megawatt-scale pilot line in Germany.

A longstanding partner of Oxford PV has said that “At an early stage, we identified the huge potential of perovskites in high efficiency solar power generation and we have supported Oxford PV to become a global leader, not only through multiple record-breaking efficiency achievements in the laboratory, but also on their path to commercialisation of the technology.”

Why Are Higher Efficiencies Of Solar Panels Important?

Higher efficiency solar panels like those developed by Oxford PV play a crucial role in advancing the renewable energy sector. Traditional silicon-based solar panels have been the dominant technology for decades, but as demand for cleaner, more sustainable energy grows, the industry must constantly innovate to meet this demand efficiently.

More efficient solar panels mean greater energy generation from the same surface area, which has a profound impact on utility-scale solar farms as well as residential and commercial installations.

By using higher-efficiency panels, solar projects can produce more power without requiring more land, which is a significant advantage in densely populated areas or regions with limited space.

Additionally, higher efficiencies contribute to lower balance of system costs, as fewer panels, mounts, and infrastructure are needed for the same power output. This, in turn, leads to a reduced levelised cost of electricity, making solar energy more competitive with traditional fossil fuels.

Recycle Your Solar Panels With Us

At PV Recycling, we are committed to supporting the entire lifecycle of solar technology by offering comprehensive solar panel recycling services. As the global adoption of solar panels accelerates, so too does the need for responsible disposal and recycling of waste panels. Our state-of-the-art facilities ensure that valuable materials such as glass, silicon, and metals are recovered and reused, reducing waste and conserving resources.
