Scientists have developed innovative methods to recover silicon from used solar panels, which can be used to create advanced battery anodes. Paired with a novel electrolyte, these silicon-based anodes enable lithium batteries to store far more energy compared to conventional graphite anodes. 

This improvement boosts battery efficiency and extends their lifespan, making them ideal for use in electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems.

The silicon anodes from recycling solar panels achieved an energy density of 154 watt-hours per pound for 80 charging and discharging cycles.
